On the outs are 5 players that combined this season for 161 games played, 34 goals, and 87 assists.
The biggest fish? That would be the Devils second leading scorer Martin Havlat, who accounted for 17 goals, 18 assists, and +1 in 39 games. Arguably more valuable though is top prospect Jon Merrill who looked promising in his fiirst 5 games, getting an assists and going +2.
Replacing the 121 points will be 5 players, 4 of whom have seen the NHL this year and put together 73 points. They have combines for 158 games, 29 goals, and 44 assists. These stats suggest a downgrade, but in general the talent level has definitely risen and the players acquired will receive more opportunities in the Devils lineup than they did in their previous franchises.
Coming from the Bruins, in exchange for top line foward Martin Havlat, second pairing defenseman Andy Greene, and the Devils' second round pick are top line, two way centerman Joe Pavelski and shutdown defenceman Bryan Allen. In Boston, Pavelski was the third highest scoring center and didn't have a winger with the offensive capabilities of franchise forward Rick Nash. The Devils feel that Pavelski will lead to a better two way capability in the entire line and will be a good fit with Nash, helping him continue to be top 10 in the scoring race. The other player coming in will surely help the penalty kill, as Bryan Allen is a great defensive defenceman and will be paired with one of the Swedish Trio (Kronwall, Hedman, and Larsson).
In the second move of the day, the Devils moved top prospect Jon Merrill, winger Evgeni Dadonov, and center Pierre-Marc Bouchard for top prospect Emerson Etem, winger Alex Tanguay, and defenseman Anton Babchuk. Etem will be joining the pro line-up and will be competing for the wing beside Nash and Pavelski, against fellow ex-Flame Tanguay and Brian Gionta. Whichever two lose out on that spot will join center Jussi Jokinen on the 2nd line that is possibly still looking to add size to it. Anton Babchuk will be a powerplay specialist, who may over-take Allen for the #4 spot on defence if his 5 on 5 play is consistant and reliable.
What does the line-up look like now?
The GM considers it a big impovement, and while size is still an issue the Devils look much more comfortable and are looking forward to playing more games.
