In a lot of cases Teams best players are their young and up and comers, these players are vital to your team and if they are 26 and Under in age they will be considered an RFA.
Here are some key points to know about Restricted Free Agents and Arbitration:
1. An RFA is a player 26 and under, you have their rights and if qualified they are not considered Free Agents but can be offered on (see #4).
2. If a player is not qualified they will become a UFA just like the rest of the older players.
3. A team can qualify there RFA by offering him a deal at a 10% raise of his last contract. If you send this qualifying offer the player can choose to sign it if he wishes.
An example of a qualifying offer would be:
Patrick Eaves RW 25 500000 1 38 64 63 60 71 75 70 75 75 73 61 55 71 62 72 69
Years:1
Salary:$550,000 (10% more then 500k)
Clauses:None
4. If a player is an RFA another team can send a Offer Sheet for the player but by doing this, you as the owner of the Players Rights has 24 hours to either "match" or let the offer go. If you choose not to match the offer you will be rewarded compensation depending on the amount of money offered by the club who sent the offer sheet.
5. Most RFA's are interested in more money then a qualifying offer, if the player is qualified though and the Gm and Player cannot come to a signing agreement, the Gm of the RFA can choose to take his player to Arbitration.
Arbitration is a court hearing where your respective RFA and his PA plee the case of the clients worth in front of the Commish while the Gm of the RFA fights his case of what he believes his player is worth.
By the end of the court hearing Commish will take the court hearing into persepective and all info on the table to create the appropriate price for the RFA.
6. If a Gm declines the Arbitration's final offer the Gm will lose the rights to the player and he will become an UFA, if they accept though he will be signed with the club for the determined price and length (see #7)
7. A Gm before the hearing gets the choice of the offer being on a 1 or 2 year deal, but he will not be aloud to change the choice after the hearing and he will not know the salary determined till after the hearing is complete.
I hope this covers all the basics of RFA and Arbitration if you have any questions ask below.
