I am very happy with the active start to the league, great activity, tons of big deals and GM's making their mark on their teams. I will try to do this when I can, but this is the 1st ever GM Rankings...
Rankings will be based on:
#1 Activity within DHL
#2 Strategical moves made GM (Trades/Signings etc.)
#3 Team and Player performance
Here we go....Don't take anything personal, this is just for fun and of course one person's opinion...
#30 No GM
#29 InstantRockStar
Well, IRS is a capable GM, but one that has made no moves except signing Kariya. Chicago is a very good team so no big trades might not be a bad thing but his activity hasn't been great and I'm sure he could have made a few minor deals to solidify his roster. He is also running with Auto'ed lines.....the Hawks are steering into the season without a steering wheel.
#28 Heelsox
The Wild have begun a necessary rebuild but I have problems with some of the players traded as Clutterbuck and Koivu are guys I would build around. Has also acquired no extra 1st rounders, has no future sure-bet goalie and his main acquisitions are a boom-bust prospect in Ryan Murphy and a good young winger in Voracek but it remains to be seen if those guys are worth what he gave up for them.
#27 Eamonn
Bursting into the league with a few big deals, Eamonn moved 2 of his 3 franchise players in Ryan and Getzlaf. I like the acquisition of Giroux, but downgrading from Ryan to Pavelski and than Pavelski to Pominville is something I wouldn't have done. He acquired a ton of minor pieces but nothing worth parting with Ryan for. Not a fan of the Selanne and Visnovsky deals this early as I feel they could have fetched more at the deadline. He does have potential to move up though as he has at least stuck to his youth movement. Time will tell if he decides to at least build around Perry.
#26 Beau
Beau is a veteran GM and no doubt he is probably better than this ranking but I have yet to see a real direction as he dealt away two good young pieces in Ladd and Byfuglien for an older goalie in Luongo and a prospect that hasn't lived up to expectations in Hodgson. Once he picks a direction with his team I'm sure he'll move up.
#25 Colton
Colton is another new guy that burst onto the scene pretty much trading his whole team in 2 days. Clearly a fan of trades and whilst hes won some he's also lost a few. He dealt away the best Dman in the league in Weber, and while acquiring Skinner trading Weber is not something I would do. Also moved a few other key pieces in Radulov, Suter, Franson, Blum, Ellis etc. He's acquired some big big names like Markov and Datsyuk, but if this team can't win it all soon they will be in for a major rebuild.
#24 Brandon
He knows his stuff but I don't like the fact that his team has no direction right now. Sitting in the middle of the league with no 1st Rounders in either of the next 2 years and trading a few of his top prospects for older players, his big acquisition has been Ryan Suter but he still doesn't have that franchise forward to build around.
#23 JBaker
Active guy and looks like he knows what he's doing, but I didn't like that Stamkos trade. Already having a D to build around in Hedman, I wouldn't go out and deal one of the best forwards in the league (and only 21). The main pieces were Myers and Miller. He already has a beast in Hedman and Marty STL and Vinny are getting up there so I woulda built around Stamkos. Ended up trading Hedman for Karlsson and Karlsson for Franson and some good picks. Decent return but once you got Myers and Hedman why not keep them both?
#22 VCanuck
I can't bash him for that Crosby trade, although I probably wouldn't have done it. But he does bring in the best offensive player in the league. I have no problem with his deals really except a big mistake in dealing his 1st to acquire his future goalie in Holtby when he already had one in Mason. He did bring in a a franchise dman in Yandle for Mason so it's not all that bad. Another trade I didn't like was trading Carter/Hejda/Vermette/Umberger to Carolina for Staal and 2 prospects. I feel he could have got a lot more dealing them individually. He has improved lately and I loved his Brassard trade for 2 top D prospects. Definitely a guy on his way up.
#21 TheBrad
Just got into the league and he's done a decent job so far. Has only made 2 trades but they were both very big for the future. Dealt away OE Larsson and Turris for Erixon and Anisimov. That's a trade many people have criticized but only time will tell. ALso dealt away an elite dman in Yandle for his future goalie in Mason. While he desperately needed a goalie, I would have tried to keep Yandle or acquire someone better than Mason if I had to deal him. Potential to move up.
#20 FloridaGM
Has made a few solid deals so far for his rebuild. Hasn't really acquired that big player to build around yet but I'm sure he has plans to. Without posting lines and really setting his mark on the team I can't rate him any higher than this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
#19 Islanders
For the most part he hasn't made any big trades choosing to keep and evaluate his team. That is fine, and I like he has chosen to keep his young core together, but there are some deals he could have made to progress his rebuild. Guys like Mark Streit, Trent Hunter and Rick Dipietro can bring in some valuable young pieces or picks. Activity has been iffy also and for that reason he comes in at #19.
#18 Kyaku
He knows his stuff, but has made a few trades based on players ratings from other leagues which is always a mistake. Wasn't a fan of the Orpik for Schultz swap, and while he got a good return for Crosby it's never easy or a complete win when you trade a guy like that. Other than that he's kept the core of Pittsburgh together but I can't rank him higher than this based on the simple fact he hasn't improved his team as much compared to some of the other teams in the league. Also took too long to get under the cap and got his elite goalie suspended for a month which isn't good GM management.
#17 Diglet
He's a good GM, but a bit too obsessed with drafting. Yes, that's not a bad thing, but whilst he does have a ton of 2nd Rounders and 3 1sts, I don't like his decision to trade 3 of Boston's most valuable players IMO (Lucic/Marchand/Seguin). All are young big time players and I didn't either of those 3 deals. Also moved Krejci for Hartnell which wasn't bad, but traded Lucic which left Hartnell noone to play with. The team he has now is a bit too soft and he could easily move up if he drafts well which is they key considering who he moved to acquire those picks.
#16 MirrorForce
I really liked his Perry trade. But he has made a few head scratchers. I thought he gave up more for Hemsky than what he got back. And I didn't like his Parise trade as I would have built around him but at least he brough in a much needed future dman in Cowen to play with Larsson. Return on Volchenkov wasn't great either. That Perry deal brought him up a few spots though and made a decent move to get Bryzgalov on waivers. Not sure what his plan is as he doesn't have his first this year but his team is doing somewhat decent so it looks like a wasted year and continue the rebuild next.
#15 TSeguin
I like some of the deals he made...especially the Stamkos and Brayden Schenn deals..I think he won both of those. But his team just seems like one of those teams that finishes in 8th and gets knocked out due to having no goalie, a weak defense, and no depth on offense. Until he fixes those glaring holes the end of the road for him is at #15.
#14 Dalfan
Has made some good and bad deals. I like his move to bring in Coburn and Marchand for Erik Johnson, but then he ended up dealing Coburn and Quincey leaving his D very thin. Made a few decent deals but overall he could have got more value for guys like Quincey, David Jones, etc. Also has a few pieces like Hejduk still on his team I would move for younger pieces. Overall he has stuck to his rebuild keeping his young pieces and his 1st rounder. So he does have a plan and is sticking to it.
#13 Parise
He's made some good and bad deals. His biggest one was acquiring Carlson in which he paid a hefty price. Only time will tell if he won that deal. I liked his move to acquire Bobby Ryan and he's also brought in quite a few good young players like Turris and Ekman Larsson. Overall he's done a fairly solid job with the Rangers.
#12 Aaron
A GM that once dealt Lidstrom for a 3rd it was I believe, Aaron has made big strides into becoming a solid GM. For the most part he has stuck with his veteran team making lateral moves like Zetterberg for Lecavalier and a big one in trading Datsyuk for Fisher and some nice D upgrades. I did like his deal to bring in Alfredsson who is a nice piece for a cup team. A few more small improvements and Detroit could be a legit contender this year. I would say he's done a fairly solid job with Detroit as the only options are solidifying a cup run or entering a major rebuild.
#11 MThomas
Would have been ranked higher but I didn't like his move trading Ryan. I thought he made an amazing deal to bring him in and to trade him away was kind of a waste. He has a team that can win now and even though he got some good future pieces, Ryan is a young guy that can help win now so why not keep him? I liked his Gaborik move and while I wouldn't trade Burns he did get a good return in JVR and Alzner. Solid GM that has done a pretty decent job.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#10 Dbaby
The guy hasn't changed the team much, in fact I think he overpaid for Giordano. But you can't argue with his 1st in the league position and he has added a few nice players like Skille and a great signing in Jagr. He started with a great team and made a few tweaks to make them even better. We'll see if it's enough to win a cup but similar to Vancouver, they are both legit Cup Contenders and did only what was necessary.
#9 JJ
The guy has only made 2 trades, one of them for a depth player and the other was a big one moving Luongo and Hodgson for 2 very nice pieces in Ladd and Byduglien. He has Schneider who is younger and cheaper to replace Luongo, and Hodgson's time was running out in Vancouver. He brought in 2 great two-way players that bring much needed grit to a very soft Vancouver lineup. Vancouver was a team that didn't need much tweaking and he did what was necessary.
#8 Kevin
Has done a very nice job continuing the rebuild of a young Oilers team. Got a great return from NJ on Hemsky, and acquired multiple 1st rounders for expendable players like Cogliano and I really liked his deal to bring in a 1st and Ryan Ellis for Gilbert and Brule. I think he overpaid for Hornqvist and that probably keeps him from a higher spot. But he has done a very good job keeping the core in tact and the Oilers are getting closer to becoming a playoff team.
#7 Backtrack
The guy started with what was considered a team on a major downhill slide and has managed to make them a playoff team and possible Cup Contender. He got an excellent return on Giordano adding multiple good pieces including his future goalie in Bernier. Got Savard for cheap and then dealt Savard for a nice upgrade in Lecavalier. Very solid GM that has managed to bring in more young pieces and keep his own while still keeping his team a contender.
#6 Sensfan
I've been with this guy in many leagues before and It was interesting to see him go the rebuilding route for the first time. It looks like he finally caved trading for guys like Morrow, Koivu, Ribeiro etc. but I have to say he got great value in those trades and he also has 5 1st rounders. He has done a great job with a team that started with little and it looks like it shouldn't be too long before the Sens are competitive again.
#5 PR
Been with this guy in many leagues before also and all he does is stick to his plan, find somewhere to make his "garbage" other people's "treasure" and his team is continually a top 5 team in the league. Made an awesome deal to bring in Lucic and also a legit dman in Seidenberg. Solidified his top 6 with Heatley and Hemsky and Pahlsson for 2 expendable prospects. Doesn't stop till his team is set the way he likes it and usually is able to make that happen. Has also won a cup before and knows what it takes to win. It was really hard ranking the top 5 and really they could be ranked in any order.
#4 Drew
Drew has come a long way and one has to respect what he has done with the lowly Leafs. Has kept his team young and built a team that will be in the Cup race for many years to come. Has a nice blend of grit and skill which is necessary to win. Held on to a key piece in Schenn and now has one of the best shutdown dmen in the DHL. Another guy that has a set blueprint for his team and it looks like he achieved it. Could have been even higher but he left the prospects cupboard a bit too bare.
#3 Situation
The guy overhauled an already great team with a plethora of trades. But the end result was arguably the best D core in the DHL and a very lethal top line that makes other teams cringe. Form the looks of it the prospect and picks cupboard are completely bare but the team is fairly young and will be a cup team now and for years to come. He could easily be ranked 1st but I chose to put him here for the simple reason Carolina started with less and Philly might have got the better of him when acquiring Backstrom and Semin.
#2 Army
The guy started with a great team but he made them even better. He now has arguably the deepest team in the league with a very young core and a goalie that can win in the playoffs unlike Bryzgalov. Made his team even better by capitalizing on Pittsburgh's need for Staal which brought in Letang and some nice pieces he used in other trades. Made a nice deal acquiring Erik Johnson which he then used to bring in Shea Weber...also has a D core that rival's Washington's. Overall has made some very good trades, has won the cup before and knows how to build winning teams.
#1 HockeyFreak
Well some people say Rome wasn't built in a day but the minute he came into the league he capitalized and pulled the rug out from underneath some of the new guys before they even knew what happened. Managed to land Clutterbuck and Havlat for a prospect and mutliple pieces from Columbus for Jeff Carter. Recently acquired Yandle for what I thought was a very cheap price. Very rarely does he lose trades and is a ruthless negotiator. It was hard ranking these top 3 guys but I decided to put him 1st simply because he started with less and you have to give him credit for that. Arguably the most active GM in the league also and is constantly looking for deals to improve his team and has dealt with the injury bug well. He's built great teams before but I don't think he's won a cup, maybe he will this time?
That concludes the Prelim GM Rankings...hope you guys enjoyed and they will probably be back later on in the season.
