In a troubling season, the New Jersey Devils front office has decided to keep a group of players in the organization. With depth defenceman Bryce Salvador, and backup goaltender Johan Hedberg retiring at the end of the season, the Devils have signed the following contracts:
D Victor Hedman - 5 year, 6.2 mil with a NMC
D Niklas Kronwall - 3 year, 4.65 mil
C Joe Colborne - 3 year, 2 mil
LW Evgeni Dadonov - 3 year, 2.8 mil
G Robin Lehner - 2 year, 1.4 mil
RW Travis Moen - 3 year, 1.5 mil
In signing these players, the team has brought back one of their franchise defenceman, a top pairing defenceman, a developing top 6 two way center, a young top 6 winger, a developing starting goaltender, and a gritty versatile bottom 6 forward.
The biggest signing is Victor Hedman, the Devils 21 year old stud defenceman who currently has 3 goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 29 games. That is only 3 points behind the league's leader among defencemen. Not only does he have the offensive talent to be among the league's most productive blue liners, he also has the defensive capabilities matching some of the league's best shutdown guys.
Kronwall has been a positive influence on youngsters Larsson and Hedman, and was re-signed to a 3 year deal and at 150% of his original salary.
Youngsters Colborne, Dadonov, and Lehner are core pieces to the team and the first two will become top 6 fixtures and Lehner will become the Devils starting goaltender as soon as late this season.
Moen is a role player that has flourished on the fourth line, and the Devils are more than happy to establish a new 3 year contract with Moen to have a reliable presence returning to their top 6.
The Devils will now be focusing on the contracts of Andy Greene, Colin White, and Niklas Hagman and consider offering them extnesions.
After an eventful evening for the Devils future, the team is excited about having such core pieces returning.
